Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) Selects TimeLogic
DeCypher® to Accelerate Analysis of Superfamily Database
DeCypher speeds Hidden Markov Model
investigations of Superfamily database
Cambridge, UK, and Crystal Bay, NV, July 16,
2002 The Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular
Biology (LMB) has selected TimeLogics DeCypher to advance
their bioinformatics analysis capabilities.
DeCypher will allow LMB scientists to carry out
new types of investigations which would be impossible without considerable
computing power, including Hidden Markov Model analyses related
to the Superfamily database (http://supfam.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk).
We already have conventional computing
resources, explained Dr. Julian Gough of The MRC Laboratory
of Molecular Biology, but have installed DeCypher rather than
expanding existing systems because we believe it is the best solution
for dedicated HMM-based computing.
Developed and maintained at LMB, the Superfamily
database is a comprehensive public resource covering all proteins
of known structure. Including over 7,000 Hidden Markov Models, it
provides structural assignments to protein sequences and enables
researchers to detect broader and more distant evolutionary relationships
through sophisticated remote homology detection.
LMB plans to use its pair of Dell-based (NASDAQ:
DELL) DeCypher servers to speed analysis of the Superfamily
database using existing HMM techniques as well as novel techniques
under development. The TimeLogic solution will enable the study
of significantly larger data sets that would be impractical without
DeCyphers revolutionary bioinformatics performance.
TimeLogic is delighted and honored to be
selected by such an internationally respected institution,
remarked Jim Lindelien, TimeLogics CTO and Founder. LMBs
critical bioinformatics tasks and larger experimental goals can
be addressed efficiently by DeCypher while offloading rigorous analyses
from the institutions server farms. DeCyphers proven
price-performance advantage over conventional computers reclaims
and extends the CPU capacity an organization already owns while
simultaneously broadening research objectives. Given the realities
of todays tight budget constraints coupled with exponentially
growing demands for biocomputing, DeCypher gets more done for less.
