Motif acquires TimeLogic to combine wet lab biology and biocomputing
Carlsbad,
CA and Crystal Bay, NC, Aug 20, 2003—
Active
Motif, Inc., a company focused on novel cell biology reagents,
announced that it has acquired TimeLogic Corporation in a stock
deal for an undisclosed price.
TimeLogic accelerates sequence analysis through its highly scalable, modular
DeCypher engine. This combination of software and reconfigurable hardware powers
computationally intensive search algorithms, including BLAST, Smith-Waterman
and Hidden Markov Model analysis. Though DeCypher is typically installed within
a single computer, the solution delivers the performance of hundreds to thousands
of CPUs.
"Today, genomic data is growing more rapidly
than during the Human Genome Project. This growth is fueled by
newly sequenced genomes and elaborate annotation of
all genomic data. The ability of computers and algorithms to quickly and meaningfully
analyze this data simply has not kept up. TimeLogic has developed a powerful,
flexible and cost-effective solution to directly address these data processing
challenges," commented Joseph M. Fernandez, President & CEO of Active
Motif.
"By helping connect wet lab science with computational biology
methods, we see an excellent opportunity for Active Motif to help TimeLogic’s
customers," remarked
John Archdeacon, Ph.D., head of R&D for Active Motif. "Bioinformatics
scientists need to validate in silico findings with data from cell assays.
Conversely, cell biology research can be accelerated by using large-scale
genomic analysis
to identify relationships between genes and proteins,” Archdeacon continued.
"
I am very pleased that TimeLogic has identified a rapidly growing partner with
proven experience in developing innovative assays used by pharmaceutical and
academic researchers worldwide. We expect the combined expertise of TimeLogic
and Active Motif to bring many benefits to scientists engaged in drug discovery
and academic research pursuits," stated Rick MacDonald, General Manager
for TimeLogic.
TimeLogic was founded in 1994 by Jim Lindelien and will continue to utilize
the registered trade names "TimeLogic" and "DeCypher".
The company will be moved from Crystal Bay, NV to Active Motif’s
Carlsbad, CA headquarters.

About TimeLogic
TimeLogic produces the DeCypher system for accelerating life science computation,
including BLAST, Smith-Waterman and Hidden Markov Model analysis. DeCypher speeds
critical genomic research tasks by utilizing high-speed, reconfigurable FPGA
technology that is housed in a standard computer. By delivering a scalable, modular
solution, DeCypher enables compound research techniques to be employed for more
comprehensive scientific results. DeCypher is utilized by top biotechnology,
pharmaceutical, and agribusiness companies, as well as academic and government
research institutions worldwide. TimeLogic has been accelerating bioinformatics
discovery since 1996.
